As part of The St George’s Urban Village development, the complete remodelling of the Swan Kettle factory in Birmingham’s world famous “Jewellery Quarterâ€, is in itself a major development including 292 apartments. Whilst one of the most essential decisions taken early on was to retain as much of the higher quality heritage assets as possible, much of the 1960’s facade to Camden Street had concrete spalling. The decision to remove this cladding but retain the structure, allows enhancement of much of the building whilst keeping the large-grain industrial typology.
This re-engineering of an existing building is sustainable and it also allows an architectural language to be developed and used in new build elements which will replace incongruous components in the existing building.
Project Value: £29 million
